Not only the wealthy should be able to become a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT should be able to educate everyone who is intellectually capable, ambitious and eager to learn more about science and technology. There is, however, more than $50,000 worth of academic expenses to spend on an MIT education. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to afford this. Many families have household incomes of less than $120,000 a year. Some even have only less than $60,000 a year.

MIT scholarships

Scholarships, of course, could change the course from desperate to hopeful. If you are an exceptional student, you may granted a full merit-based scholarship. However, MIT is home to many intelligent students. Having a shot at an academic scholarship can be very tough.

If you come from a rural area in Massachusetts, you may have a chance at the Agnes M. Lindsay Scholarship. You need only be a permanent resident of that rural area and must display financial need. You could also be considered for outside scholarships. Look for scholarships that are granted to a specific group of people in terms of race, gender, place of residence or course. The more specific the requirement, as long as you are qualified, then the more chances you will have at the scholarship because applicants are fewer than general scholarships. The Engineering Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE) is an example. It is, however, directed to juniors and seniors who have good academic standing and community involvement.

Scholarships are very attractive because, like grants, they do not need to be repaid. You do not have to worry about slaving your future years in employment trying to pay off student loans. Not all scholarships cover all your MIT expenses, though. You may still need to apply for a loan, albeit a much smaller one, or you could find an on campus job for more support.

A scholarship, whether a full one or a partial one, can really pave the way to a more fulfilling four years at MIT. With financial pressures gone, you can focus on becoming part of the future evolution of science and technology.
