Boston University was chartered in the year 1869. Boston University originated in Newbury, Vermont as a Methodist seminary with the name New Biblical Institute. Its founder, a zealous Bostonian abolitionist, raised $15,000 to start a secondary school in 1839. In 1847, the school moved to New Hampshire and finally in 1867, it found its home in Boston.
Isaac Rich, Lee Claflin, and Jacob Sleeper became the founders of what is now known as Boston University. The three obtained from the Massachusetts Legislature a charter for the university.
Considered as a research university because of its very high research activity, Boston University is one of the largest private universities in the United States. Robert A. Brown is the incumbent president of the university since 2006.
Boston University has 18 schools and colleges on two urban campuses. The main campus can be found along the Charles River in Boston’s Fenway-Kenmore and Alliston neighborhoods. On the other hand, the Boston University Medical Campus is situated in Boston’s South End neighborhood.

Boston University ranked 56th in Times Higher Educational Supplement’s top 200 Universities of 2009. For 2010, US News and World Report hails the University 56th among national universities.
