The University of Florida is a public research institution located in Gainesville, Florida. The university, which was established in 1853, sits on two thousand acres of land. In the United States, it is considered a top rank school despite the fact that it is a public university. It has even been considered one of the US’ public Ivy schools. It is also a member of some prestigious organizations of universities, including the Association of American Universities where it is an elected member. The University of Florida is, in fact, considered one of three flagship research centers in the state. It is the symbol of the reach for higher education in the public school system in Florida.

Degrees Offered

During its early years, the University of Florida could only offer a few courses, under the agricultural and life sciences, education and building construction. Gradually, through the years several other degrees began being offered in the public university. Major degrees such as Law and Engineering were introduced in the first ten years of the institution. Today, practically all the degrees that you can think of are in the University of Florida, ready for picking from students who may not be able to afford the private Ivy League schools.

The history of the University of Florida is rife with notable personalities in cinema, literature, the government, sports, and so many other fields. To at least give you an idea, part of the myriad of celebrities are actress Faye Dunaway, author Michael Connelly, TV personality Bob Vila, and even Wendy Thomas, for which the fast food chain Wendy’s has been named after. There are Nobel prize winners, senators, and company presidents among the lot as well.

It is easy to see that the University of Florida is indeed one of the most popular national universities in the United States. After all, it has produced so many graduates, from which so many celebrities have emerged. In terms of yield, it is definitely world class. It boasts of having produced the most international baccalaureate students in the world for the school year 2004 to 2005. The university also ranks 47th among all the universities and colleges in the country (U.S. News & World Report for 2010). It places 15th among public universities (U.S. News & World Report 2010). One of the most important rankings associated with the University of Florida, however, is that it is 13th among American universities in terms of job placement for its graduates (2009 Princeton Review).

Admission Tips

Though the university continues to produce several graduates every school year, it has become more competitive. Because of this, acceptance rate has spiraled downwards. Ninety-four percent of freshmen are retained. Because of this, you have to make sure that you present your best face to the admissions committee. Do enroll into a good high school program to up your chances in the university. The University of Florida has the lowest acceptance rate among public institutions in the state.
