The University of Texas at Austin is thus called because it is the flagship institution of the University of Texas system, which happens to be located in Austin. The university was founded way back in 1883. Though there were talks of a university in Texas years before that, in 1827, the confused history of the state has prevented the founders from breaking ground soon after a university came to mind. The Mexican government did not immediately take action. It was only until the United States of America took over Texas that a hundred thousand dollars in bonds was set aside to fund the building of a university. Fortunately, the University of Texas was established in 1883. Today, it boasts of having one of the largest enrollment among other universities in the state.

Because the University of Texas at Austin has one of the top number of enrollees in the state, it is no surprise that it is home to a big variety of disciplines or degrees. There are also interdisciplinary programs that allow students to take on several disciplines at one go. The university is made up of several schools and colleges that provide venues for different kinds of students with varying interests. Schools, such as of the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, are wealthy with selections. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. The University of Texas at Austin is proud to have produced several notable alumni, from the fields of government, showbusiness, sports, and many more. Actresses Farrah Fawcett and Renee Zellweger graduated from this university while singer Janis Joplin attended the institution. In fact, there are so many other Hollywood actors that have attended or graduated from this university, including Matthew McConaughey and Eli Wallach. As for other notable alumni, Gatorade inventor Dr. Robert Cade, Supreme Court of Appeals Judge Diane Pamela Wood, and gymnast Mary Lou Retton all attended the University of Texas at Austin.

Rankings and Reviews

The University of Texas at Austin has been ranked differently by different authorities in university ranking. It was placed as high as 38th in the world. This is according to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The US and World Report, on the other hand, it placed the university at 70th in the world. What is important in this case is that the university has been consistently regarded as a university that deserves to be part of the world’s top one hundred. The Economist has placed the university at 49th in 2009.

If you belong to the top ten percent graduates of your high school senior class, you can be assured that you can be admitted to the University of Texas at Austin or to any Texan public university for that matter. That is a guarantee that has been arranged in the state. However, this does not mean that you will be admitted to the particular program of your choice.
