The University of Texas at Austin is thus called because it is the flagship institution of the University of Texas system, which happens to be located in Austin. The university was founded way back in 1883. Though there were talks of a university in Texas years before that, in 1827, the confused history of the state has prevented the founders from breaking ground soon after a university came to mind. The Mexican government did not immediately take action. It was only until the United States of America took over Texas that a hundred thousand dollars in bonds was set aside to fund the building of a university. What is important in this case is that the university has been consistently regarded as a university that deserves to be part of the world’s top one hundred. The Economist has placed the university at 49th in 2009.
